In 2010 I had strong desire to become an internet marketing consultant. I ended up getting a job as a corporate training manager for a large phonebook company. When I started, the company put me through their intensive internet marketing training which was tightly aligned with their products and services.
It wasn’t a happy time to be working for a phonebook company. Almost everyone was pulling their ad budgets out of the phonebook and investing in digital marketing. The phonebook companies could see this, so they quickly threw together a full line of digital marketing products and services.
I was excited to be learning what was necessary to have success in digital marketing.
The problem was the phonebook’s digital marketing products were terrible. I mean really terrible. It was painful working there because the products were so bad.
They got terrible results for their clients, and they were suffering financially because of it.
So, on Good Friday in 2011, I was downsized along with a lot of other managers across the country. And while I didn’t know what I was going to do, I was certainly relieved.
A couple of weeks later, I was talking to a training manager friend of mine. He told me he just landed a great job with a large law firm marketing company. He said that this company had much better websites and digital marketing products and services.
That sounded like a great place to learn more about high quality digital marketing, and I loved the idea of getting to work with lawyers. So, I applied for a position as a law firm marketing consultant and I landed the job.
I was super excited to get started.
I went through another round of intensive digital marketing programs that was closely aligned with the company’s products.
While the company’s web marketing products were slightly better, I would also dump them into the waste bucket. Their products looked a little nicer on the surface but the results they got for their clients were terrible. Because the company’s website, SEO, and digital marketing were so bad they were also suffering financially.
Then, on a warm day in October in 2013, the company had to let 300+ people go. I was one of them.
Again, I felt relieved.
After a couple of weeks, I started getting phone calls from people I worked with at the company. They were asking me if I wanted to start a small law firm marketing company. While I appreciated the offers, I politely declined. They kept calling and I kept saying no.
Then one day while talking to my old regional manager, I said, “well maybe – but only on one condition.“
The one condition was that we would create the highest quality law firm marketing products available.
I was a little nervous to make the commitment. Not only because I was going to be using my severance package money to launch the business, but I was nervous that it that might not work. I didn’t have a proven track record of success.
Once I made the commitment, I knew I had to see it through. I spent mornings and evenings learning what it took to get to #1 on the internet.
I contacted a couple of law firms and explained to them that I had really been studying what Google was saying and I was going to be offering something very different than what was currently available in the legal marketing space. And I asked them if they wanted to give it a try.
They luckily agreed to hire our company and we went to work. After about 60 days we launched our very first program.
At first, we saw very little in the way of results. Then around the 90 day mark we saw some dramatic results. One of our personal injury clients shot up to #1 on Google. The remarkable part was that we outranked some well-established law firm websites with very large internet marketing budgets.
That was unbelievable at the time.
The client was thrilled. They went from zero cases from the internet to consistently getting great cases from the internet every month.
We launched another law firm with our programs and got the same results. Another happy client!
Then another and another.
Once we knew we had something that got great results we created a system.
Now, I want to share this system with you so you can learn what you need to do to consistently get good cases in the door each month from the internet.
Don’t spend another day worrying about the future of your law practice.
